Ice Sculptures in Ottawa

Cityscape, Photography

It was one of my retirement projects to scan and edit my two children’s young pictures before the digital camera days. I finally set my mind to do it after “only” 18 years since my retirement. In going through some old pictures I came across some nice pictures of ice sculptures at the Winter Festival in Ottawa in 2001, exactly 20 years ago. We lived in Massena, New York then on the St. Lawrence River, so Ottawa was only one and half hours drive away. The theme of the festival was Australia. The ice sculpture reflected the Australian scene and they were beautiful at night! One thing we also remembered vividly was the cold temperature at night especially the wind chill, it was at least at -25 degree C. Brrrr! but it was worth it!

Thank you! They were beautiful ice sculpture, especially with illumination at night! I always felt Ottawa was colder than Massena and Montreal.

We saw how the artists carved the ice structures in the daytime. However, with illumination of each ice sculpture at night was quite a different sight.
